RANDOM AND EMBLEMATIC:
THE SOUND OF SPACE

RANDOM AND EMBLEMATIC:THE SOUND OF SPACE

VA | Modern Obscure Music

2023

It’s a pleasure to bring together, on this album, musicians with whom I feel a very special connection, namely Felicia Atkinson, Büşra Kayıkçı, Carmen Villain, Kuniyuki Takahashi, Pavel Milyakov, KMRU, Ana Quiroga and Abul Mogard. All of them have been very generous in their willingness to participate in an artistic experiment that’s been on my mind for a long time: to build bridges between architecture and music.

Each of these artists chose a space and translated it into a piece of music, and the result is a sonic kaleidoscope through which specific territories can be gazed upon from unexplored points of view. The compositions that make up this compilation are synaesthetic windows through which we can observe with our ears. To look through them, all we have to do is listen and we’ll be able to contemplate, in a unique way, spaces located in such different places as Vilches (Chile), Istanbul (Turkey), Oslo (Norway), Sapporo (Japan), Nairobi (Kenya), London (England), Rome (Italy), Berlin (Germany), or even in imaginary universes.

(Pedro Vian)

The London Overground has inspired me as an architectural structure for this compilation. The overground network is a complex structure that draws part of the city and does it prominently in Hackney, where I live.

However, instead of physically dividing hoods and pedestrians as roads do, the overground creates an ecosystem of bridges and arches, shaped by human development and constant changes. In these arches, everything is possible: car repairs, bakeries, hidden cinemas, fishmongers, yoga pods, breweries… And between bridges and stations, nature also has a place to flourish, creating mini forests and space for wild animals, like foxes.

Encouraged by the power of psychogeography, I wanted to express how this architectural structure makes me feel, and I have composed an emotional soundscape that evolves and moves continuously, as the train does. For this track, I have used different field recordings from the overground and surroundings, including train electricity signals captured with contact microphones. As well as digitalised instruments and a beautiful conversation with my 2yo (at that time) friend Remi.
